Spoiler alert: Norweigan Wood was sad, it was depressing. This is one of my favorite books, during a time when I read all my favorite books... when I was 18 or 19. There was something so beautiful about this book that was unlike anything else Murakami wrote, in my opinion. What was most poignant was the estrangement that Toru felt through Naoko's feeling of loss for Kizuki. He could never have her. No one could understand her, ultimately leading her to suicide. In the movie, there was so much going on about Toru and Naoko's relationship, and that feeling of alienation was not as strong as I would have liked. Instead, as the minutes tick by, you start to wish you had something to suffocate yourself and end it quickly. You think Naoko is just plain crazy, she has gone to that place where she might smear shit on the walls and wants the world to suffer with her. You cannot relate, thinking, I too would die in order to be with this person again. One thumb up for beauty and cinematography, one thumb down for discrepancies from the book/lack of depth. What did you think?

Daily Candy on Access Hollywood Live!

Just yesterday I was at the NBC Studios in Burbank at the crack of dawn to tape this segment on Access Hollywood Live, the "12 Must Haves for 2012". Suchin Pak, former MTV VJ, is now a spokesperson for Daily Candy, and came up with the idea. I was helping out a friend by modeling for this, so we can consider this my "tv modeling debut". ;) They needed "real" models... that's me! I love Daily Candy as a source for insider knowledge on all things fashioney. They are responsible for a lot of my favorite sample sale finds, like my $5 Mike and Chris jacket, or my $20 long cashmere sweater from James Perse. I put in my time with all the other LA girls when I lived there, sometimes waking up a little too early on a Saturday morning to wait in line for a good deal, but it was always worth it. Thanks, Daily Candy!

So it looks like this new year's eve is going to be one of mixed feelings, as I am in LA for a bit to take care of an important shoot, and my entire suitcase full of my favorite things plus my christmas presents has been lost in transit by Delta. Thanks a lot, a**holes!! So here's to drinking heavily tonight and feeling weird thanks to not having new underwear for the last few days, and forgetting about one's problems and looking at pictures of kittens with rainbows! But seriously, honestly.. 2012 is going to be very different! Here's to hopefully having a better economy, more budding fashionistas, and always living the dream!

Dear Santa,

Can't a broke-ass boutique owner dream? I only post these because I know my boyfriend and I have completed our Christmas-on-a-budget shopping. I've been good and bad this year, sometimes I couldn't be asked, but 98% of the time I worked my ass off, spent sleepless nights scheming and planning, and have flopped on my bed and fell asleep before my head hit the pillow on most nights. My most major offense this year would have to be getting easily and overly frustrated. I have spent myself to utter exhaustion and back. I have lived the dream for a year and while it was physically, mentally and emotionally taxing, I've enjoyed every minute of it. I've watched my online boutique progress healthily during a grinding recession, and I'm so grateful. I've listened to many speakers and entrepreneurs with eagerness and an open heart. I have somehow utilized my boyfriend's skills and hidden talents to the 1000th degree, and along with friends and loved ones, have come to this point. I appreciate those who have helped me with their endless generosity, strength, and support so much that I could easily give them my life. When things get so hard that you want to give up, and someone comes and picks you up by your arms and runs with you to keep you going... that is when you see the true vision of love, with such clarity. Thank you, friends, supporters, and Austin, for making it such a good year for Violet Boutique! :*)

Anywho... there was an article all over facebook, I'm sure you've read it, about how a Christmas present's cost is not directly correlated to a person's enjoyment of it, it's really the thought. There was actually research dedicated to this notion of "memorableness". The most memorable gifts are the ones when you've spent the time really picking what you thought the other person would want; and it could be handmade, free, or cheap. They mentioned this article on NPR too, and asked a bunch of people what the most memorable present was to them. The best presents I've ever received , or the only ones I can really remember, were the gifts of travel. My father took us to Vegas back when we lived in West Virginia (which is just how you think it is) for Christmas, when I was 8. We stayed at the Excalibur, which is a random, cheap, hotel, my parents aren't gamblers so they instead played tennis at the hotel's court with me, and we ate at buffets. I remember eating a lot of corn and mashed potatoes (I'm picky). It was not an expensive trip, but it was a getaway from the snow and cold, it was relaxing, we had fun, and it is one of my most poignant memories of my dad. He was a young engineer at the time, only a few years older than I am now, and he taught me the importance of taking the time to get away with your loved ones and see new things when you are stuck living in a random ass place, even if you have a tight budget. Otherwise, very simply, you get depressed.

So, all I want for Christmas this year is to see my family and be with my boyfriend, which is happening anyway! Oh, and maybe I'll buy that gold dust atomizer for myself because it's so darn sleek. What was your all-time favorite Christmas present?

Long, Beautiful Hair

Men and women everywhere are obsessed with long, straight, shiny hair. I have bouts of bipolar hair disorder, where I manically wish for a puffy afro, or a bowl cut a la Karen O, or something extreme, and the rest of the time I want natural, healthy, down-to-my butt hair. Nicole Scherzinger of Pussycat Dolls/XFactor went to my performing arts high school, and was a few years ahead of me. I was at Sparks, which was the local disgustingly grungy place to go to for a gay club on the weekdays or for whatever indie band shows, Get Up Kids or VHS or Beta on the weekends, and for some reason, she had infiltrated the scene by coming with a friend, and she looked very out of place. Amongst the pale and pasty, tatted, pierced kids was Nicole, a tanned and thin goddess with the longest, fullest, shiniest brown mane of hair I'd ever seen. I stood there with my gauges, short cropped hair (bc we were all wanting to be like Winona Ryder in Girl, Interrupted at the time), signature black hoodie and vintage army bag covered in band or label patches as a purse, talking to a friend, and literally the hum and chatter stopped to take a good look at her hair. I believe she was also wearing white capri pants.. I mean, what? We were befuddled.

My boyfriend likes to pet my hair, or I ask him to run his fingers through my hair so I can sleep, is more like it. "Pet me please"-- like a dog. Sometimes I'll turn around and lay with my hair close to his reach for ease of petting. There was an episode of PeeWee's Playhouse when Peewee was daydreaming about Miss Yvonne. PeeWee had a very extreme and perverse hair fetish, and there was this moment where Miss Yvonne came very close to him, and they were sitting by a waterfall. PeeWee's hands trembled and his eyes grew wide with his gross desire to pet Miss Yvonne's hair. PeeWee and I could have made a good couple.

Why SHOULDN'T you get chrome Minx nails?

I got these bad boys done at Zaza salon down at 2nd and South Park, and although they look amazing and striking, and people stop me all the time so they can look at them... they started peeling on the second day! The manicurist warned me, but I was determined and thought I had some secret to nail longevity. Sadly, I am a mere mortal and my nail stickers started peeling. I even took a hairdryer to them to melt the sticker and push it back on like they told me to, but no luck. The saddest part is that it cost $48 just for Minx on my hands. I'd pay this much for gel nails with a design, because I know it'll last a month, but 2 days?? Woe is me. Sally Hansen or Sephora, please please please create matte and shiny chrome nail stickers! No more leopard merging into tiger print or christmas trees, please? Skulls and zebra prints on nails are OVER! You heard it first, here at I Eat Fashion, kakaka.

'Twas a lovely day in Potrero Hill, some of the highlights were Violet customers and followers coming to say hello and shop, eating vegan banh mi that were literally cooked on a pan on a folding table but were DELISH, the sunglasses vendor where I always have to buy a pair, the 2nd crocheted cat vendor that has been at Indie Mart (there are multiples?!), the Chairman Bao truck, my new VB employee, Sam!!!!! aaaaaaand Magnolia Photo Booth.
